Jiri Anderle was a Czech graphic artist, printmaker, illustrator, and painter, known for his surreal and symbolic imagery, often infused with dark and macabre themes. He was born on 1 February 1936 in Stankov, Czechoslovakia and died on 17 February 2021. Anderle studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and began his career as a graphic designer and illustrator of books. In the late 1960s and 1970s, he turned to printmaking, specifically the techniques of copperplate etching and aquatint, which became his primary medium. Anderle's works have been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States and have won numerous international awards. He is considered one of the most important Czech printmakers of the 20th century.
